During a hearing Tuesday before Circuit Judge Cheryl Caracuzzo, Alexander Acosta pleaded to one count each of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and DUI causing or contributing to an injury in the death of Carmen Martinez, 58, of Hialeah.

In addition to the prison term, Caracuzzo ordered that Acosta be placed on four years of probation after completing his sentence. He will also have to perform 150 hours of community service and attend a panel where victims of DUI describe how the incident affected their lives.

The crash took place March 18, 2017, on the 7700 block of Forest Hill Boulevard, near Okeeheelee Park. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Acosta's vehicle rear-ended Martinez's car.

Acosta, now 26, told investigators at the time that he drank two cups of whiskey mixed with cranberry juice in the hours before the crash.

Investigators said he exceeded speeds of 67 mph while driving in a 45 mph zone. When questioned, Acosta admitted to speeding and said he did not see Martinez’s car until the crash was unavoidable, authorities said.

Following the hearing, Acosta was remanded into the custody of the state Department of Corrections.
