Depending on how you use it, the word "nerd" can be as a term of endearment or a crushing insult. For the sake of everyone living in Utah, we're going to hope the people behind the following survey were using it in the former context. READ: Study Determines Happiest, Most Miserable States A real estate blog called Estately recently composed a ranking of the "nerdiest" states in America by analyzing the likes and dislikes of Facebook users from each state (and Washington, D.C.). Nerdiness was then determined by that state's percentage of Facebook users who "liked" one of the following 12 subjects: "Star Trek: The Next Generation"; cosplay; "Harry Potter"; "Star Wars"; anime movies; Dungeons and Dragons; LARPing (live-action role-playing); "Doctor Who"; fantasy literature; "Lord of the Rings"; Magic: The Gathering; and comic books. Curious to see which states boast the most "nerds per capita"? Take a look at the reasoning behind the top five, then scroll down for Estately's comprehensive list. Utah "Even if you factor in its high percentage of young people, Utah’s enthusiasm for nerdy interests is unparalleled in America," wrote Estately, who noted Utah's superior nerditry in the subjects of cosplay, "Harry Potter," "Star Wars" and LARPing. #2. Alaska Fantasy games seem to be extra popular in Alaska, where they ranked 1st in percentage of Facebook users who like Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. #3. Wyoming Wyoming follows Alaska in users who admit to playing Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering (coming in 2nd in both categories). They've also got quite the soft spot for "Doctor Who." Idaho Estately described Idaho as "one of the premier states for those into fantasy literature," as residents can join the local chapter of the Tolkien Society or study fantasy and sci-fi literature at certain Idaho universities. #5. Colorado It's not surprising to learn that Colorado ranked fairly high in almost every category. Estately pointed out how there's several comic and toy conventions that take place in the state on an annual basis. In other words, John Goodman's character from "Revenge of the Nerds" would probably scream until his lungs burst if he coached football in the state of Colorado: For the rest of Estately's list (and which state likes which nerdy activity the most), have a look at the chart below.
